Caleb graduated from Dartmouth College, in 1801, with first rank and honors of his class, of which Hon. Daniel Webster was a member; studied for the ministry and was ordained pastor of the Congregational Church at Newport, Rhode Island, September 12, 1804. Resigned his charge May, 1814. Was afterwards installed pastor of the Congregational Church at Wethersfield, Connecticut, March 27, 1816. He received the honorary degree of D. D, from Yale in 1829; resigned his charge at Wethersfield in 1841, on account of ill health, and in 1842 moved to Northampton, Massachusetts, where in 1843 he was appointed agent of the American Colonization Society, which position he held for the remainder of his life.
