Biography

Samuel Tenney, born in Rowley, Mass., 21 August, 1692, sou of Thomas and Margaret (Hidden) ; married in 1712, Ann Cressey, who was born 5 April, 1688, and bapt. 29 September, 1689, daugh- ter of William and Anne (Hadden). They "owned ye covenant" 6 June, 1714. She died 22 Dec, 1717, "of palsy or apoplexy.'" (Rowley Record.) He married 18 December, 1718, his second wife, Sarah Duty, who united with the church in Rowley 25 Aprril, 1731, and died 21 December, 1767, For the sum of £72 he transferred to William Bennett of Rowley nine acres of land in Rowley. Wife Sarah releases her dower, 1 February, 1720-1. (Essex Deeds, 39:121.) Samuel Tenney was a cooper, 30 November, 1719. (Essex Deeds, 89: 101.) On the right of his father as a soldier in the Narragansett war, he received in 1735, lot No. 2, land grant in Maine. (Buxton, Vol. 22, p. 278, Archives.) He died suddenly 6 February, 1746-7. (Church Record.) His daughter Elizabeth was mentioned in the will of her great-great-uncle, Joseph Quilter, 28 January, 1723-4. (Essex Probate, 15 : 28.) Residence, Rowley.
