Michael Tennyson was christened in 1721 at Barton upon Humber. His parents were Ralph Tennyson and Dorothy Chapman [1].
Michael married Elizabeth Clayton on 29 Jan 1745 at Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire, England [2]. By marrying Elizabeth, the heiress daughter of George Clayton, a Baltic merchant, in 1745, Michael acquired further links both generic and financial with Holderness. Elizabeth's mother, Dorothy Clayton nee Hildyard was the daughter and co-heir of Christopher Hildyard of Kelstern, Lincolnshire.
Michael was a surgeon of Preston and he had a shop for his apothecary business. According to a draft settlement dated 1769 Michael had married Jane Collings the relict of John Collins late of Kingston upon Hull in 1760 [3]. The document which is a draft talks about unhappy differences and so they were separated and he lived in Preston and she in Hull. Jane had three daughters by her first marriage and Michael had agreed to pay for their education. Two years before this George (his son from marriage to Elizabeth Clayton) went to train as an attorney and was apprenticed to William Iveson at Hedon, the same lawyer who saw to the separation document.
He passed away on 6 Oct 1796 at Preston by Hedon, Holderness, Yorkshire [4].
