Research Notes

Catharina had died and Dirck had remarried before 3 August 1760, when "Dirik" Terhuen and his wife Elisabet witnessed the baptism of Dirck's grandson Dirck by his daughter Weyntje.[3]

When "Derek Terheun" of Bergen County wrote his will on 8 September 1766, he named wife Betty; sons Albert, Nickasie, Jacob, and John; unmarried daughters Gertye and Leya; and married daughters Annatye, Weyntye, and Betye.[4] The will was proven 5 November 1766.

The online will is an abstract of the original, but assuming it is accurate, it reveals several details. First, son Pieter is not mentioned, so he must be assumed to have died young. Second, Dirck was married to a woman named Betty, assumed to be the Elisabet who witnessed the 1760 baptism mentioned above. Third, Dirck mentions a daughter Leya. He gives an "outset" to Gertye and Leya when they marry, equal to what the other daughters had already received. However, Leya is not mentioned with the other four daughters as receiving 400 pounds. It is possible that Leya was young and expected to live at home for some time, so her share went to Betty's support. It is more probable that Leya was a child of Betty and not Catharina, as Catharina was 40 years old when son Pieter was born in 1748.

Dirck Terhuyne had a child:

  1. Leya, born after 1750, mother uncertain

The "Record" article on the Amerman and Terhune families[5] has a note about the possible identity of Dirck's second wife Elisabet / Betty, on page 303. Zabriskie, in an article in the GMNJ 1966 issue, speculated that Betty was the "Elizabeth Terhune, Bergen" who married Hendrick Hopper, as his second wife, in 1770. See the extensive footnotes in the article for details.
