Biography

Teunis was baptized in the Reformed Dutch Church of Kingston, New York, on 7 February 1697. Kingston baptism notice #946 in Hoes lists parents as Gerrit Lamersse and Ante Hoogland. Witness was Derrick Hoogland.[1]

Theunis Teerpenning and Margrieta de Graaf were married in the Reformed Dutch Church of Kingston, New York, on 30 August 1718. It was a first marriage for both; banns were not published. [2]

Their daughter Hester was baptized on 3 January 1720 in the Reformed Dutch Church of Kingston. The baptism record names her parents as Theunis Teerpenning and Grietjen de Graaff. Witnesses to the baptism were Jan Teerpenning and Jannetjen de Graaff.[3]

Their daughter Marytjen was baptized on 24 December 1721 in the Reformed Dutch Church of Kingston, New York. Her parents are listed on the record as Theunis Teerpenning and Grietjen de Graaff. Sponsors of the baptism were Christiaan de Joo and Marytjen de Graaff.[4]

Teunis Terpenning was buried in Esopus, Ulster County, New York.[5]

Will

The published abstract of his will in New York State Wills states:

"In the name of God, Amen, May 6, 1746, I Tunis Terpenning, of Kingston, in Ulster County, being sick. My wife Grietie is to remain in full possession of my estate till my youngest child is of age. I leave to my son Gerritt a choice of horses or cows, as he is my first born.[6] I leave to my sons, Jacobus, Abraham, and Hendricus, all my farm where I live, situate upon Hudson River in Kingston, and all that tract of land, being 171 acres, conveyed to me by the Trustees of Kingston by deed, April 6, 1745. My wife is to have £7 per annum. My sons Jacobus, Abraham, and Hendricus are to pay my other children, Gerritt, Ester, wife of Robert Hanna, Mary, wife of Petrus Van Allen, Bridget, Hannah, and Elizabeth, £120. I make my wife Grietie, and my son Jacobus, executors. Witnesses, Martinus Van Alen, Dirck Terpenning, Jacob Terpenning. Proved November 17, 1748." The transcript of the will in Ulster County Probate Records reads:

"My wife Gritie is to remain in full possession of my estate till my youngest child is of age. To my son Gerrit choice of a horse or a cow, as he is my first born son. To my sons, Jacobus, Abraham and Hendricus, all my farm where I live, upon Hudson river in Kingston, that is all that tract of land of 171 acres, conveyed to me by the Trustees of Kingston, Apr. 6, 1745. My wife to[8] keep one room of the house I am now dwell in and the use of the Celler and one bed, bedstead and bed Cloath, as much Household goods as She shall think she has Necessary use for (if still living and unmarried) and when my youngest child comes to age) and £7 per annum. My sons Jacobus, Abraham and Hendricus to pay to my other children, Gerrit, Esther, wife of Robert[8] Hanna, Mary,wife of Petrus Van Allen, Bridgit, Hannah, and Elisabeth, £120.[8] To my nine children all personal estate except the weavers loom and Tacklin given to my son Jacobus, Abraham and Hendrikus. Wife, son Jacobus [8] and my trusty friend Abraham Hasbrouck appointed executors. Witnessed by Dirck Terpenning (his mark), Martinus Van[8] Aken, Jacob Terpenning. Proved Nov. 17, 1748.

Another transcript of the will (source not cited) reads:

Will dated 6 May 1746, Proved 17 Nov 1748. Will lists children Gerrett, Jacobus, Abraham, Hendricus, Ester Hanna, Mary Van Aken, Bridget, Hannah, Elisabeth. Witnesses to Will were Dirck Teerpenning and Jacob Terpening (probably his brothers; Don E. Terpening states death date of 17 Nov 1748. (New York State Wills Vol 16 page 372) In the name of God, Amen, May 6, 1746, I, TUNIS TERPENNING, of Kingston, in Ulster County, being sick. My wife Grietie is to remain in full possession of my estate till my youngest child is of age. I leave to my son Gerritt a choice of horses or cows, as he is my first born. I leave to my sons, Jacobus, Abraham, and Hendricus, all my farm where I live, situate upon Hudson river in Kingston, and all that tract of land, being 171 acres, conveyed to me by the Trustees of Kingston by deed, April 6, 1745. The LNAB is done, as far husband at least. It looks like he might be the only possible Teunis Terpenning at this point as his father was the progenitor?

I added his church records which might help to clarify. The order of the names of the children looks almost traditional, though they didn't name a child Moses.

Let's not merge these until an appropriate LNAB is associated with one of the profiles. I'm pretty sure LNAB should be Teerpenning, but it's too late tonight to check the records.

Also, I recall some uncertainty as to whether there was more than one Teunis associated with these profiles. Don't want to conflate two or three people into one profile.
