1882 - Robert Terris had to retrieve the body of his neighbours five year old son from a soft water tank. '...Robt. Terris, boatman of Walton said - I live next door to Mr. F. J. Bachelor. Last evening the 26th inst., about six o'clock, Mr Gracie came to my house and said he thought there was something in the well in Mr Batchelor's yard. I went with him and got a pole and put it down and I felt something at the bottom. There was about five feet of water in the well. I got a piece of yarn and lashed a boat hook to the pole and pulled the body up. I found it was the body of Frederick William Bachelor, son of Mr. F. J. Bachelor, fisherman, Walton. The child was quite dead. I carried him into my kitchen and he was afterwards taken to his father's house. The place is a soft water tank, with an opening level to the ground, and has a wooden removable lid. Mr Welham saw the deceased and declared there were no marks of violence on the body, death resulting from suffocation from drowning. By the way the deceased was lying, I think he must have fallen in head first. There was a small cask or buoy near the tank over which he might have stumbled. William John Gracie, engine fitter, Walton, said - I lodge at Mr F Batchelor's. I saw the deceased last at about three o'clock in the afternoon on the 26th instant, he went out in the yard to play. At six o'clock in the evening, in consequence of the deceased having been missed since four o'clock I put a pole down the tank and felt something like the body of a child. I then went and told Mr. Terris, the last witness, and we pulled it out.' (Saturday 30th December 1882, Essex Standard)
