Biography

Birth

John Terry was born at Freetown, Massachusetts, on 26 May 1708, the son of John Terry and Remember (Farrow) Terry. John Terry received a share in the estate of his mother, Remember (Farrow) (Terry) Gage in 1749.[1]

Marriage

John Terry and Lydiah Williams published at Freetown, Massachusetts, their intention to marry on 10 Feb 1731/32, and they married there on 20 Feb 1731/32..[2][3] On 23 Mar 1735, John Terry of Freetown, blacksmith, and Lydia his wife, sold 39 acres of land in Taunton which had come to them as Lydia's share of the estate of the estate of Immanuel Williams.[1]

Will

John Terry of Freetown, Massachusetts, made his will on 18 Feb 1774. He names his wife, Lydia; his sons, Zephaniah Terry, Ebenezer Terry, Silas Terry, and Job Terry; his daughters Rachel (Terr) Crane the wife of John Crane, Hannah (Terry) Paine the wife of Job Paine, Welthea (Terry) Jones the wife of Thomas Jones, and Lydia Terry, who was then unmarried.[1]

Research Note

The Massachusetts Births and Christenings, 1639-1915 database has an entry for a John Terry born at Freetown on 28 May 1708 but says that he died at Freetown on 1 Dec 1710.[4] The entries for Freetown in that database are taken from a transcribed volume of Freetown records, and the death date conflicts with the conclusion of the author of the Mayflower Families Five Generations volume on the Thomas Rogers family, who identifies the John Terry born on that date at Freetown with the John Terry who married Lydia Rogers and made his will in 1774 and cites the probate file of his mother for the fact that he was living in 1749.[1] (Bloom-1124 17:43, 3 January 2020 (UTC))
