Biography

Asaph Terry was a farmer by occupation, a colonel in the militia, and served in the Revolutionary War.

In July, 1776, he belonged to a company of militia of which David Perkins was Captain, and Ephraim Terry was Lieutenant. The Company was ordered to NEew York city to aid in its defense, and he served as musician. After the defeat (Aug. 27, 1776) on Long Island, he retreated fro the city with the army, and was discharged after three months’ service. In Dec., 1776, he volunteered for three months with Captain Phineas Lovejoy of Suffield, Conn., to go to Horse Neck (now Greenwich, Conn.) and vicinity in guarding the place from marauding incursions of the enemy. In the spring of 1779, he was drafted into the company of Captain Jonathan Bush, of Enfield, who joined the regiment of Colonel Pease at New London.

He was a man of great physical strength and it is related of him that he walked from New London to Enfield, a distance of about sixty miles, in one day, carrying his deceased brother Levi’s effects in a fifty-pound package upon his back.
