By Stephen Terry October 27, 2000 at 05:20:25 In reply to: Re: Wake County, NC Terry's 10/26/00 My mistake, I misunderstood. I thought James was born in 1801, not 1813.That would have his mother be someone other than Hannah Now I'm clear Wake County census records aren't available for the period 1810-1820.Tax records show two Johns around from 1800 (where the census shows them both) till 1810 when the first John, who owned 200 acres east of Raleigh, disappears from tax records. The second John is around in tax records until about 1815, where his son William (listed as such in 1813 tax records!), picks up his lots in the city of Raleigh. I believe this to be the William listed with children in the 1830, 1840, and 1850 censuses.

John owned lot 79 in the 1809-1812 tax records. Then, he started paying taxes on lots 1 and 2 in 1813 (no more 79).These lots were originally purchased by a Mrs. Terry in 1792 when the city was surveyed.

Maybe this John inherited the lots after Mrs. Terry died? Perhaps this Mrs. Terry was the wife of Starling , who may have died between the 1790 census and 1792?Many of the land records of the time were destroyed in a fire in 1832.

Perhaps my second John and your John (and Hannah) are one in the same? When did your John and Hannah move to SC?I would very much like to clear up the Terry family in Wake County from 1790-abt 1830,1840 when my information is much better.
