Norman enlisted in July, 1940 in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve as a Surgeon-Lieutenant. In March, 1941, he volunteered for service in the British Navy. He served on various British ships, as well as being posted in hospitals in Tobruk, Libya and Alexandria, Egypt. He was serving on the HMS Abdiel when it sank after hitting a mine in the harbor of Taranto, Italy, September 10, 1943. He was one of the 48 crew who were killed when the ship sank.
Memorials are located at Halifax Memorial, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Edmonton Municipal Cemetery.[3][4]
