Henry enlisted on September 3, 1861 at Monticello, New York, and was mustered in as First Lieutenant in Company D, 1st New York Mounted Rifles on September 18th. He was promoted to Captain (of Company A) on August 13, 1862; Major, on March 18, 1863.
On September 6, 1865, the regiment became known as the 4th New York Provisional Cavalry. The unit was mustered out November 29, 1865 at City Point, Virginia.[1][2]
