Jacob enlisted on May 18, 1861, at Newburgh, New York, and was mustered in as a private in Company B, 36th New York Infantry on June 17, 1861. He was wounded in action July 1, 1862 during the Battle of Malvern Hill, Virginia. He mustered out with his company July 15, 1863 in New York City.[1]
