Carl majored in social psychology and graduated in 1948. On September 20, 1949, he began a year-long training class for the Los Angeles County Probation Department, where he worked from 1950 until his retirement in 1986.[3]

Carl was then stationed in Canada and Alaska, working with the U.S. Army Air Corps' Army Airways communication systems until April, 1946 when he was discharged. While in Edmonton, Alberta, he met his first wife, Sophia Kully. They were married in Edmonton on November 3, 1945.[4][5]
