Disputed Origins

Ann [Tetherly]? appears in a Torrey's marriage record as marrying Miles Thompson between 1655 and 1660, in Kittery.[1] She is said to have been born in Kittery in 1635, and some trees have her parents as William and Christian (Thorne) Tetherly. No records have been found to support any of this, however. The marriage record sources include "Hodson 16 has Tetherly", which refers to page 16 of "Genealogy of the descendants of Nicholas Hodsdon-Hodgdon of Hingham, Mass., and Kittery, Maine. 1635-1904", links here:[1]. This book, published in 1904, appears to be the origin of Ann's surname having been Tetherly. The book does not attempt to provide any detail on the Tetherly family.

The "Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire" mentions a William Tetherly, born in Devon, England, who died in 1651, married, first, Christian Thorne in 1619[2], and second, Mary Harges in 1636. It is unclear where this second marriage occurred, or when William settled in Maine. His will of 30 April 1651 (not yet found on-line, not in Sargent's "Maine wills : 1640-1760") mentions sons Gabriel, John, and William.[3] Gabriel (bp. 1623), John, and William Tetherly are separately listed, but not explicitly identified as the sons of the first William. Gabriel and William (Jr)? were brothers, however. There is no mention of a daughter.

"Old Kittery and Her Families"[4] mentions Gabriel Tetherly, who married about 1657 Susanna, widow of Richard King[5] Born in Devon, England, admitted to Boston in 1656.[6] It also mentions John Tetherly, born ca 1630 per deposition[7], fisherman, presented at court in 1661.

There is nothing to tie Ann to the Tetherlys mentioned above. It seems that the 1651 will of William Tetherly is the best hope for establishing Ann as his daughter.

It seems prudent to change her LNAB to Unknown. Her birth location has been removed, as it is also not known.

Biography

Ann (Unknown) was born about 1632, based on a 1717 affidavit, cited below, where she gave her age as about 85 years old. She was probably born either in England or Kittery.

Ann married Miles Thompson about 1655, in Kittery, based on an estimate of the birth year of their first child.[1] Miles was living in Berwick in 1655, and he and Ann appear to have lived there.

Ann and Miles had children, listed by approximate birth years based on marriage years:[3] Note that this differs from her FindAGrave bio. Find A Grave: Memorial #126639998

  1. Ann (ca 1655), married Israel Hodsdon about 1671, then Robert Evans
  2. Mary (ca 1657), married Thomas Rhodes about 1679
  3. John (ca 1658), married Sarah Emery about 1680
  4. Amy (ca 1660), married Daniel Goodwin in 1682
  5. Sarah (ca 1664), married James Goodwin in 1686, then William Hearl
  6. Bartholomew (ca 1666), married unknown wife by 1688
  7. Miles (ca 1668-1724), married unknown wife
  8. Thomas (ca 1673-1715), married Sarah Furbush about 1698

Ann was of Berwick in 1694 when she and Miles deeded land to their son Thomas, in exchange for support in their old age. Ann was to be kept "near" the Piscataqua River if she outlived Miles. Weeks later they deeded land in Berwick to their son Bartholomew. In March 1702/3 they deeded land in Kittery to their grandson John Thompson, father John deceased.[8]

Miles died sometime after deeding the land in 1703 and 30 June 1708, when Ann acknowledged that the deed to her grandson John was the act of herself and her deceased husband. Ann was alive on 19 September 1717 when she, age about 85, and her in-law James Emery, age about 87, affirmed the deposition of John Nason. [8] No death record has been found for her.
