Biography

Christopher Thames was born about 1800 in South Carolina, United States, [1][2] to John Thames and Susannah Richbourg. He is called "Charles Christopher" in his father's will, recorded November 5 1818. [3], which is transcibed on John Thames. (Susannah’s first name, but not maiden name, is in the will).

In the 1850 US census, Christopher Thames (50) and wife "Elis" Thames (50) were living in Sumter, South Carolina, with children Charles (19), Alfred (18) and Eliza (17). He was a planter.[1]

Research Notes

The following census records match him in birth information, but the other people listed with him don't clearly match with his expected (1850) family.

In the 1860 US census, Christopher C Thames (60, born South Carolina) was living in Sumter, with Mary C Thomas (60) and Mary C Thomas (17). He was working as an overseer.[2]
In the 1870 US census, C C Thames, age 70, born about 1800 in South Carolina, was living in Sammy Swamp, Clarendon, South Carolina, with wife Elizabeth Thames (66), and with Mary Borwell [Boswell] (26), William Borwell [Boswell] (23) and Elizabeth Baker (12). He was a farmer.[4]
In the 1880 US census, C C Thames, age 81, born South Carolina, widower, was living in Sammy Swamp; he was the father-in-law of W H Boswell; also in the household were Mary M (37) (presumably C C’s daughter), John C (9), Jessie A (7), Carrie E(5), and Charles W(2)[5]
