Biography

Sarah Thayer was born about 1644 at Braintree, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Thomas Thayer and Hannah Unknown.[1][2]

The vital records of Braintree include the following entry for the marriage of Sarah and Jonathan Hayward:

Jonathan Hayward & Sarah Thayer were maried 3d mo. 6th 1663, by Peter Brackett[3]

Since, in the old calendar, March was the first month, this means they were married on May 6, 1663.

Jonathan, William, Samuel, Benjamin, Huldah, Deborah, Sarah, children of Sarah Haward, widow, baptized May 8,1692 and Jonathan, William, Huldah, & Deborah then owned the covenant. "Sarah Haward, widow, child of this Church", admitted to full communion, Mar.13, 1692.[1]

Sarah Hayward died at Braintree in 1695.[2]

Research Notes

Sarah's parents are often quoted as being Thomas Thayer and Margery Wheeler. However, there has been much confusion about this family and it is more likely that they are Sarah's grandparents. Her parents would then be Thomas Thayer Jr. and Anna / Hannah. Braintree records don't start until after Sarah was born, but since her joining the Braintree church on May 6, 1692 lists her as a "child of the church" it's very likely she was born in Braintree somewhere between 1640 and 1643. If born in 1642, her father Thomas would have been 20 and her grandfather Thomas 46, making either one a possibility of being her father. It does appear her father Thomas' first child Hannah was born in 1741.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Sarah by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Sarah:

I found a source that lists Jonathan Hayward and Sarah Thayer marrying on May 6 1663. See Thayer-2260 for note and source. Because the calendar back then started in March, the 3rd month was May.

Research suggests that Thomas Thayer and Margery Wheeler were Sarah's grandparents, not her parents. Thomas Thayer and Hannah are more likely to be correct. Please see Thayer-2260 for notes.

Thayer-2626 and Thayer-1761 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, spouse, and date of death.

Most likely a duplicate of Thayer-2626. Some research to confirm the correct birth date is needed and then they should be merged to prevent duplicates in the database.
