LOUIS THÉROUX, SR. was born June 15, 1862 in St. Michel d'Yamaska, Québec. His parents were Joseph Paul Theroux and Matilda Parent. Louis was the second son in a family of 14 children. He was the only one in his family to immigrate to the United States.
He farmed in Emardville Twp and in 1900 purchased a farm in Terrebonne Twp., in what was then Polk Co., Minnesota. Louis went to work in the logging camps during the winters. Many of the roads in Red Lake County have road stakes with his name on them as he would also help with road construction during the winter months of Northern Minnesota.
Louis married PHILOMÈNE VAILLANCOURT January 10, 1888 in Emardville Twp, Polk Co., Minnesota,daughter of FRANCOIS VAILLANCOURT and MATHILDA PICHE'. Philomene was born June 15, 1867 in Montréal, Canada. Philomene's mother, Mathilda (PICHE') Vaillancourt, a widow, was a mid-wife and taught her daughter Philomene in the ways of this role for the village of Terrebonne residents. Her son, Albert "Bert" Theroux would recall that his mother often went to the river and the fields to gather herbs and plants that had medicinal values.
Louis and Philomene were the parents of 19 children.
Philomene died November 22, 1941 at age 86 yrs, 11 mths and 5 days in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. Louis died March 19, 1956 at age 93 Yrs 9 Mths and 4 days, in St. Vincent's Home, Crookston, Polk County, Minnesota. They are both interred in Saint Anthony of Padua Cemetery in Terrebonne, Red Lake county, Minnesota. Their headstone is next to Philomene's mother, Matilda Vaillancourt.
