Obituary

Evelyn Eldora Hamel, daughter of Leo F. and Christina (Swanson) Thieman, was born March 26, 1912, at Grand Rapids, Michigan. She passed away Monday, September 9, 1996, at Blue Valley Lutheran Nursing Home in Hebron, Nebraska, at the age of 84 years, 5 months and 13 days.

In 1915, she moved with her family to Nelson, Nebraska, area. She attended schools in Deshler, Carleton and Nelson and graduated from Nelson High School in 1930.

April 3, 1942, Evelyn married A.F. "Bill" Hamel in Nora, Nebraska. They lived on a farm near Bostwick until the fall of 1969, when they moved to Guide Rock to make their home.

Following her high school graduation, Evelyn began her 39 year teaching career. She obtained her college education through summer school, correspondence courses and off-campus classes. She graduated from Kearney State Teachers College in 1960. During her teaching career she taught grades K-12. Evelyn retired from teaching in 1979, from the Guide Rock Public Schools. Her teaching ability touched the lives of everyone she came in contact with and will never be forgotten.

Throughout her lifetime, Evelyn enjoyed playing cards, going on her daily walks, Nebraska Corhusker football and traveling with her friends on the Good Life Tours. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

She was a member of Guide Rock United Methodist Church, Delta Kappa Gamma Society, American Legion Auxiliary, National and Nebraska State Retired Teachers Associations and Guide Rock Quilters.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Bill, April 11, 1970; two sisters, Leona Thompson and Florence Wroughton, and one brother, Leo Elvin Thieman.

Survivors include one daughter, Karen Lindhorst and her husband Red of Loveland, Colorado; one son, William Hamel and his wife Steph of Davenport, Nebraska; one sister, Marguerite Johnson of Kearney, Nebraska; one sister-in-law, Jean Hamel of Horton, Kansas; one brother-in-law, Wayne Wroughton of Nelson, Nebraska; five grandchildren, Jeff Lindhorst and his wife Thelma of Goosecreek, South Carolina, Jacque Sible and her husband Kirk of Estes Park, Colorado, Kent Hamel and his fiancee Dorry Peterson of Drake, Colorado, Marc Lindhorst of Loveland, Colorado, Kari Hamel of Estes Park, Colorado; and three great grandchildren, Cassandra, Jeffrey and Shelby Lindhorst of Goosecreek, South Carolina; nine nephews, five nieces, other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held Friday, September 13, 1996, at 10:30 a.m. from the United Methodist Church in Guide Rock, Nebraska, with the Revs. Alvin E. Trucano and Dennis Sylte officiating. Carol Shambaugh sang "Footprints". Dorry Peterson sang "If You Could See Me Now" with Susan Sholtz, pianist. The congregation hymn was "Beyond The Sunset" with Shirley Hunter, organist. Casketbearers were Dick Wroughton, Marc Lindhorst, Kent Hamel, Kirk Sible, Dwane Hamel and Darrell Thompson. Honorary casketbearers were Wayne Reed, Clifford Bailey, Loy Robb, George Sund, Rich Wulf and Wayne Wroughton. Burial was in Guide Rock Cemetery. Simonson-Williams Funeral Home of Red Cloud, Nebraska, was in charge of the arrangements.
