JOHN THIGPEN, son of James Thigpen and Elizabeth Manwaring, was born August 19, 1694 in Perquimans Precinct, Provence of Carolina. The family home, "Shannon," was on the west bank of the Perquimans River where the town of Hertford [founded 1739] is today. It burned in September of 1743.[1]
He studied medicine abroad and in Virginia, later settling in Perquimans Precinct where he was a millowner and planter. He lived on his grandfather Manwaring's land on Vose's Creek; his brother James III lived at "Shannon."[1]
He married abt. 1713 SALLIE (EVANS) EVANS of Perquimans, the daughter of Richard Evans and the widow of her cousin John Evans. She was born three months after her father died, thus was raised by her stepfather JAMES OATS who died on October 6, 1703, then by stepfather REV. RICHARD FRENCH.[1] [See her profile.]
In April of 1722 his brother James III took John, brother Francis and their uncle Henry for a visit to his Tar River settlement. They traveled by boat via the Pamlico Sound.[1]
According to deeds, he also inherited lands in Chowan Co. where in 1726 Charles Jordan (abt.1700-abt.1773) sold 600 acres to Robert Willson, at which time it adjoined lands James Thigpen when Wilson sold this land in 1734, the bounds called for lands of John Thigpen.[1] [His father died in 1731, bro. Francis in 1737 in Duplin Co., and bro. James III in 1743.]
Later, he moved to Johnson [1758/Dobbs/1790Glasgow/1799Green] Co., North Carolina, where he died abt. 1756 and Sarah died abt. 1761.[1] Thus he died before Dobbs Co. was set off and Sarah after.
There is no record of a grant being issued to John, nor any deeds in Johnston Co. showing him purchasing land. He possibly moved with his son James whose youngest child was born in Perquimans in 1753 and who on March 17, 1756, received a patent to land adjoining Francis McClendon and Samuel Sanford, [2] whose lands were on the north side of Great Contentnea, thus near present Snow Hill, Greene Co. NC. Son James would have arrived there a few years earlier to find and apply for land.
In 1762 [son] Jonathan was granted 300 acres in Dobbs Co. adj. Samuel Sanford line on the lower side of Piney Pocoson.[3]
John Jr., the eldest, is said to have lived in Johnston [Greene] County for several years while he "looked around" and to have owned several hundred acres which he later sold to his brothers and to William Hicks.[1] [Could this have been his father's land.]
