Emily was born in 1865[1] in Driffield, Yorkshire, England, where she lived with her family on Mill Street in 1871.[2]
At the time of the 1881 census, Emily was working as a servant for Robert and Sarah CHARTER at 2 Holderness Arcade, Hull.[3] In 1891 she lived with her parents at 93 Barmston Street; she worked as a dressmaker.[4]
She had her own drapery business by 1901, when she lived at 74–75 Barmston Street.[5] In 1911 she was the head of household, accompanied by her sister Eliza, a fancy draper, and mother.[6]
