Charles Thom was born in Scotland.

Charles Abercrombie, the son of George and Elizabeth (Richardson) Thom was born in 1805 and baptized on 1 May of that year at Dunnottar, Kincardineshire, Scotland, UK.[1]

Charles married Mary Gourlay, the daughter of David and Elizabeth (Brown) Gourlay on 25 April 1828 at Canongate, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.[2]They had six children. Their eldest was born at Scotland and the remaining children at New York:

  1. George Thom (b. 19 Mar 1829; d. 1891),[3]m. 1851 at New York City, Matilda McMein (1832-1898)
  2. Charles A. Thom (b. Jun 1833; d. 8 Feb 1901), m. Jane Armstrong (1833-1891)
  3. David Robert Thom (b. Sep 1838; d. 1910), m. Rachel Rebecca Phyfe (1839-)
  4. Marion Emma Thom (b. Aug 1843; d. 17 Sep 1926, Peekskill, NY), m. James Harding Phyfe (1836-1900)
  5. Virginia Thom (b. 4 Dec 1844; d. 15 Apr 1918), m. James E. Sims
  6. Francis Thom (b. 15 Jan 1847; d. 4 Jan 1921, NYC), m. 2 Apr 1869 at Manhattan, NY, Mary Dinan (1852-)[4]

Charles, Mary and their eldest son, George, emigrated from Scotland to the United States prior to 1833 as the remaining five children were born in New York. The 1850 U.S. census shows that Charles (43 years), occupation 'Cabinet Maker' and Mary (41 years) were residing in New York with their children George (21 years), occupation 'Umbrella maker,' Charles (17 years), occupation 'Brass Finisher,' David (13 years) Mary [sic] (7 years), Virginia (5 years), and Francis (3 years).[5]

Charles Abercrombie Thom died on 14 July 1864 of consumption in his 59th year and was buried on 17 July of that year.[6]He is buried in the Green-Wood Cemetery at Brooklyn, Kings, New York.[7]
