Carl was born in 1821 in Grumsdorf, Germany. He died in 1922 according to his obituary. [1]
Carl married Fredericka Huebner, daughter of Johann Huebner on 05 Nov 1852 in Gramenz, Neustettin, Pommern, Germany.[2]
They had three daughters together - Hanne W. (Thom) Kieper who died at age 25 in Germany, Auguste Emelia (Thom) Eberhart, and Henrietta (Thom) Keiper. Both Emilia and Henrietta emigrated to the US, settling in Illinois.
Carl and Fredericka emigrated to the US in April of 1879 arriving on 11 Apr 1879 in New York on the ship Suevia.[3] Carl and Fredericka were listed as "between deck passengers." Between deck was another term referring to steerage. The ship Suevia was a large passenger ship that was assigned to Hamburg, Germany to New York runs starting in 1874.[4]
In 1880, Carl, wife Fredericka, daughter Henrietta Thom and grandson Carl Thom (probably Charles Keiper, son of Henrietta's husband William Keiper) were on the Pella township, Ford county, Illinois census.[5] After he was widowed, he was on the 1900 and 1910 censuses in Pella township, living in the household of son-in-law William Keiper and daughter Henrietta (Thom) Keiper.[6][7]
Carl died on 01 Apr 1915 at his daughter's home in Pella township[8] He was buried in Brenton cemetery near Piper City in Ford county, Illinois.

Death of Carl Thom Carl Thom died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William Keiper, in Pella township, on Thursday, April 1, 1915, his death resulting from injuries received in an fall a few days previous to his death, and mention of which was made in this paper last week. Funeral services were held at the Keiper home on Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Louis J. Albert and were largely attended. Burial was in Brenton cemetery.
Carl Ludwig Thom was born in Grumsdorf, Germany, on August 21st, 1821. In the fall of 1852, he was married to Mrs. Fredricka Huebner. To them were born three daughters, one of whom died in Germany at the age of 25 years. The others Mrs. Albert Eberheart of 2934 Herndon St, Chicago, and Mrs. William Keiper of this place.
Mr. Thom came from Germany to America in the year 1879 coming at once to Piper City, where he has since made his home with his daughters on the farm. He was a quiet and unassuming gentleman, and while of late years, owing to his advanced age he had not mingled with the public, yet was well known and esteemed in the home community. Besides the two daughters, eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren are left. to mourn his death.
