Biography

Hardin Thomas was born about 1766 in Elizabethtown, Hardin County, Kentucky. He died May 1837 in Elizabethtown, Kentucky probably living his entire life in this place.
He was a son of Owen Thomas and Nancy Austin. He married Mehitable Bernice Garrard probably sometime between 1788-1789 because the birth of their first known child was in 1790. However I have found no actual record of the marriage. The best evidence of this marriage comes from Hardin's will. He names Mehitable B Thomas as his wife. In the well, Hardin gives his 150 acre property to his son William Harrison Thomas but reserves for his wife the use and benefit of all the property until her death with the "discretionary power of giving or bestowing to any of my children" during her lifetime. After her death then the 150 acres goes to William H Thomas and the rest to be equally divided between all his children. Hardin also made a provision for Elizabeth Davenport but does not mention their relationship. Hardin does not mention all of his children by name, but he made his sons William Harrison and Isaac executors of his will. He signed this will 26 Aug 1837. His will was presented for probate 17 Jul 1837 and proved 26 Aug 1837

There is evidence that Hardin Thomas' home in Elizabethtown was at least partially built by Thomas Lincoln, President Abraham Lincoln's father. Some believe that Thomas Lincoln was involved in the construction of the entire house but there is evidence that he at least was involved in the constructed the staircase, and the finish work such as the mantles and moldings. A local group in Elizabethtown restored The Hardin Thomas house in the early part of the 1970's and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. Unfortunately the house burned down due to arson in May, 2009.

Thomas-35456 and Thomas-14030 appear to represent the same person because: They are both husbands of Hetty Gar(r)ard and both die in 1837. The one noticeable difference is the year of birth, but there is no evidence for the later figure.
