Biography

Martha Ellen Thomas was born 26 June 1862 in Franklin County, Georgia to parents, Ezekiel Thomas and Vander Artimissie Clark. ^[1] At the tender age of eight years old, Martha Ellen moved from Georgia to Gregg County, Texas in 1871 with her parents and three younger siblings. They traveled by covered wagon along with a large group of friends and extended family members. The 1880 census shows Martha living with her parents in their new location in Gregg County, Texas. Martha is 18 years old, the eldest of the seven children. ^[2]

On 3 October 1881, Martha Ellen married James Russell Randall in Longview, Gregg, Texas. ^[3] In their early marriage years, Russ Randall farmed as that is what most men did in that area. They later moved to the Tyler, Texas area where Russ worked at a newspaper as a printer. From there they moved to Dallas where he worked on the Dallas newspaper as a printer and typesetter.

In 1900, Martha and husband James Russell Randall are still residing in Gregg County, Texas. They have three sons, ages 18, 16 and 14 years old. ^[4]

In 1940 Ellen, a widow, was living with her son Walter Randall in Fruitvale, Van Zandt County, Texas. ^[5]

Martha Thomas Randall died in Fruitvale, Van Zandt County, Texas on the 5 August 1947. ^[6] Martha was buried in the Oakland Cemetery in Dallas, Texas and her Internment card lists other family members along with her own information. ^[7] Her FindAGrave Memorial has a photo of the tombstone for her and her husband. The Memorial lists her entire family, spouse, children, parents and all of her siblings. ^[8]

According to her niece, Frances Fears, her Aunt Ellen was a sweet person - quiet and timid. She was a trim, prim person. Frances said she would always remember the lovely house-shoes that she wore; her winter ones were fur trimmed. As a small child, this impressed Frances.
