Biography

James Vernon Thomas was born in September1802, Loudon Co., VA. He was the son of Joseph E. Thomas and Elizabeth that had settled in Lee Co., VA and previously of Loudon Co., VA.[1]

James first married Hannah Greiver born February 1803, Smythe, VA. They lived in Lee Co., VA and had 10 children. Hannah died in 1863, Lee Co., VA.[2][3]

The second marriage for James was to Nancy M. Tucker on 21 March 1864. They were married in Lee Co., VA by Rev. R. P. Spencer[4][5]

Nancy and James would have two children; Victoria that died just after birth in 1865 and Daniel Bird Thomas, born 1866. Daniel Bird was named for Nancy's brother, Daniel Bird Tucker.

July 1868 Lee Co., VA-James Thomas writes to Mary Caroline and James Smith in California. "Dear Sister and family, It gratifies me very mutch to see your potographs but I never expect to see aney of you in this World. I want to give you a little advise riatt here. I want you to hold ought faith ful to the end and ras yor Children up in the nutur and adminition of the lorde." James writes to them about Nancy Martha: "When I am gone I wold like for my Companion to be with you if it were how she cold. I never can discribe the prase she is werthy of for the treatment to ward me, she is redy at every call. Farewell to the day of Judgement when we will strike hands to part no more frever. Amen - James Thomas"[6]

James Vernon Thomas passed away in October 1869 in Lee County, Virginia.[7]
