Research Notes

(Thomas-7679 04:39, 29 June 2017 (EDT)) Information from the Rootsweb and Genealogy.com references below. Neither source is verified, although the Genealogy.com site mentions a few sources. So more robust sources are welcome if anyone is aware of any available online, or able to summarise information from offline resources!

From the Rootsweb site: Recompense b 2 Nov 1709 was the son of John Thomas and Mary (Unknown). He married Elizabeth (Unknown) on 26 Jul 1731 at Ridgefield. They had the following children:

Elizabeth b 18 Jan 1732 m Jacob Weed
Recompence b 28 Jan 1735 m Sarah Lawrence on 25 Feb 1757
Jerusha b 17 Feb 1736 m James St John
Mary b 4 Mar 1740 m Mr Bennett
Betty b 16 Apr 1742 m Thomas St John
John b 19 Jan 1744 m Martha St John
Hannah b 8 Apr 1746 died young
Phebe b 23 May 1747 m 1. Elisha Smith, 2. David Row
Abraham b 30 Jun 1751 m Mary
Daniel b 30 Nov 1754 m Eunice Foster
Rebecca b 5 Sep 1756 m Stephen Jackson.

From the Genealogy.com site. Wife's name given as Elizabeth Deming (sister of Elias Deming)

From the above it seems: 1. Mary Ford attached as the wife of John Thomas and mother of his children, including this Recompense Thomas, may be the incorrect mother.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Recompense by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Recompense:

From Douglas Richardson, “The English Ancestry of the Merwin and Tinker Families of New England; Part Two: John Tinker of Boston and Lancaster, Massachusetts and Windor and New London, Connecticut,” New England Historical and Genealogical Register (149[October 1995]: 423):

“Mary Waller, b. at Lyme in the spring of 1679;[123] m. John Thomas of New Haven.” [Footnote] “123. Lyme VRs, 2:182.” In reviewing the Vital Records of Lyme, New London County, Connecticut, per the Barbour Collection, I have not found a birth (or marriage) entry for Mary Waller. This source is now online as: https://dcms.lds.org/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?dps_pid=IE4530519 The position of footnote 123 in the body of the text implies that it only pertains to the birth of Mary Waller. By what source(s) can it be determined that Mary Waller married John Thomas of New Haven? Assuming that Mary Waller married John Thomas of New Haven, by what source(s) can it be determined that he was identical with John-3 Thomas (Daniel-2, John-1), as presented by Jacobus in Families of Ancient New Haven at 7:1728? “John [Thomas] b. c. 1672, d 25 Jan 1711/2 ae 39 WHT1; m. Mary -----; she m (2) Richard Porter & (3) Deliverance Downs.”

Hi Rae, I went ahead with the proposal for the merge, after reviewing the two profiles. I am more than happy to work with you on the issues that I think you were concerned about regarding the merge (mother and one of the wives). Please don't hesitate to contact me if you would like to discuss this. Kind Regards

Thomas-17242 and Thomas-16770 appear to represent the same person because: Clear duplicate. See research notes on the Thomas-17242 re mother and second wife. These separate issues are able to be resolved independently of this merge.

Hi Rae, I am with the Thomas Name Study and would like to work with you on the unmerged match with Thomas-17242. Is the main issue the parents or are there other issues that need to be resolved? If you have any accessible (online) sources that would be helpful. Many thanks.

He is not the son of John Thomas and Mary Ford. This John Thomas was not the husband of MARY FORD, as many have on Ancestry, RootsWeb, & elsewhere! Although his mother is Mary Unknown.

The Mary Ford connected married a different John Thomas, who was born March 4, 1675 (son of John Thomas & Lydia Parker)
