1739 Birth

Evan Thomas was born 21 Jan 1738/39 in Prince George's County, Maryland [1]

He was the son of Samuel Thomas, b. 12 Nov 1702, All Hallow's Parish, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, d. 3 Feb 1780, Anne Arundel County, Maryland (Age 77 years). His mother was Mary Snowden, b. 12 Nov 1712, West River, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, d. 3 Feb 1780, Anne Arundel County, Maryland (Age 67 years) They married 11 Aug 1730 Anne Arundel County, Maryland [1]

From the Archives of Maryland Online, Evan was the nephew of Philip Thomas (1693/94 - 1762) not the grandson.

1763 Witnesses Land Action

Prince George's County, Maryland Land Records 1763-1767; Liber TT {Abstract by Mike Marshall}; Page 76.

  • At the request of Clement Trigg & Jeremiah Trigg the following Deed was recorded August 25, 1763
  • Indenture made July 21, 1763; between Christopher Lowndes, merchant for himself and Francis Hatfield attorney in fact for the executors of John Hardman, late of Liverpool, merchant and for William Whaley likewise of Liverpool, merchant of the one part and Clement Trigg & Jeremiah Trigg of PGCo of the other part. Whereas Clement Trigg late of PGCo Co., planter father to the said Clement Trigg & Jeremiah Trigg was justly indebted in the sum of 53 pounds currency to the said Christopher Lowndes, John Hardman and William Whaley and privately did remove and abscond from the place of his abode and an attachment was taken out by the said Christopher Lowndes, John Hardman and William Whaley against the lands and chattels of the said Clement Trigg by virtue of which a certain tract called "Glovers Hall" was taken up raising condemned in Prince George's County Maryland court to pay and satisfy the said debt and cost accruing thereon.
  • Now this indenture witness that Christopher Lowndes for himself and the said Francis Hatfield for the executors of John Hardman, deceased and for William Whaley for them and each of them in consideration of 40 pounds currency has sold unto the said Clement Trigg and Jeremiah Trigg all that tract called Glovers Hall" containing 150 acres and beginning at a bounded red oak standing at the head of the Upper Deep Branch formerly called Prindle's Branch. On 26 December 1766 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, he married Rachel Hopkins, b. 30 Dec 1742, West River, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, d. 3 Dec 1825, Baltimore County, Maryland (Age 82 years). "Evan Thomas the son of Samuel Thomas of Frederick Co. m. 12th month 26th day,1766 to Rachel Hopkins the dau of Gerrard Hopkins of A. A. Co. at Indian Spring."[1]

Zadock Magruder and Evan Thomas recorded 15 December 1770, made 21 July between Charles Beatty ofFrederick County and George Fraser Hawkins ofPrince Georges County, for £6 sells lot in Addition to Georgetown, being a part oftract Knave'sDisappointment, known as lot #83. He is to pay annual rents. Acknowledgment, and Marthawife ofCharles Beatty and SusannaTruman wife of George Fraser Hawkins relinquished dower rights before Charles Jones, Andrew Heugh [1]

1776 Sells Lot in Carrollsburg

At the request of Evan Thomas the following Deed was recorded April 6, 1776 Indenture made March 21, 1776; Henry Rozer, Daniel Carroll and Notley Young, Gentleman, trustees of Charles Carroll, Esq. for the purpose of erecting a Town called Carrollsburgh on Potomack River in consideration of 6 pounds sterling money paid by Evan Thomas of Frederick County, Maryland has sold "Lot Number 191" which he drew in a lottery. Signed H. Rozer, Daniel Carroll, Notley Young in the presence of and acknowledged before Christopher Lowndes, Richard Henderson [1]

1777 Frees Slaves

Montgomery County Land Records, 1777-1781; Liber A1, Page 67. Discharge, recorded at the request of Evan Thomas. I, Evan Thomas of M, hereby set free from bondage, my 11 Negroes hereafter named, viz, my Negro man named Billy, aged about 39 years, and my Negro man named Bash, aged about 38 years, and my Negro woman named Fanny, aged about 25 years. Also my Negro woman named Sal or Sarah, aged about 20 years. Also my Negro woman named Plina, aged about 20 years. And I likewise discharge from my service, the following young Negroes when they arrive at the ages hereafter expressed, that is, the males to be free at age 21, and the females at 18, viz, a girl named Cassy, aged about 10, a girl named Hannah, aged about 81A, and a Negro or Mulatto girl named Kate, aged 2 years and 10 months, and a girl named Candace, aged 2 years and 10 months, and a boy named Boston, aged 2 years and 9 months, and a boy named Ben aged 8 months. Signed the 24th day of the 4th month, 1777 - Evan Thomas. Wit - John Hopkins Jr, Samuel Hopkins, Edwd Burgess*. Recorded Oct 6, 1777. [1]

Montgomery County Land Records, 1777-1781; Liber A1, Page 258. Oct 17, 1778 from Allen Bowie Jr of M, to Evan Thomas of M, for 500 £, a tract of land now called Poplar Pond, being part of a tract of land called Good Luck, lying in M, containing and now laid out for about 50 acres. Signed - Allen Bowie Jr. Wit - Joseph Wilson*, TSprigg Wootton*. Ruth Bowie, wife to the above mentioned Allen Bowie. relinquished her right of dower to the within mentioned land. Recorded Mar 20, 1779. [1]

Also my Negro boy named Jack, when he shall arrive at the age of 21 years, which will be on the 20th day of the 10th month 1788. Signed this 4th day of the 2nd month in 1780 - Evan Thomas. Hi Brian. I am with the Thomas Name Study. I have been looking at this profile as he is older than his father, and it generated a database error. I have found a source suggesting he is actually a nephew of John's father Philip. Do you have any other sources or information relevant to this? Many thanks!
