According to his death certificate, David Thomas was born in Lanelly (now Lanelli), Wales, in about 1826 (based on his reported age).[1] His family has not yet been determined as there were a number of David Thomases living in this area.
David came out to South Australia to work at the Burra Burra copper mines. He married Sarah Hopkin, also an immigrant from Lanelly, at St. Mary's Church, Kooringa, on the 17th of June 1855 when he was about 28.[2] David and Sarah had about 17 children together, but only ten of them outlived their parents.
The family went to New South Wales on the ship Kalahome, arriving in Sydney on the 29th of January, 1870.[3]
Based on the birth locations of their children, it appears that the family moved to different mining areas in NSW for work: Newcastle 1870 & 1871, Currawang/Goulburn area 1872-1878, Carcoar 1880, Mount Hope 1882. in 1879, David Thomas was the manager of the Currawang copper mine.[4] Sarah died in 1892.
David died at Nymagee on the 3rd of June, 1896. He was recorded as 70 years of age.[1] David was buried with Sarah in the Nymagee Cemetery.[5]
