Biography

Born: Lewis Thomas was born on 10th day, 5th mo.,1750.[1] [2]It is unclear if this date is based upon Julian or Georgian calendar so the month could be either July or May. He was the son of Stephen Thomas and Mary Clothier.

Married: Lewis Thomas and Agnes Breedon were married in 1775.[3]

U.S. Census and Other Records: In 1790, Lewis is found living in Richmond, North Carolina with 3 males under the age of 16 and 8 females. [4] On February 1, 1797, Lewis Thomas and his family were living in Peedee, North Carolina.[5] In 1810, he is still living in Richmond with 1 male under 10, 2 males 16-25, 1 female 10-15, and 2 females 16-25. Also listed in the household is 1 "other free person." [6]

Quaker Records:

Quaker meetings in Marlboro, both in North Carolina and South Carolina, began about 1755 with the Pee Dee MM, Gum Swamp, Deep River, Piney Grove and others. These were included in the New Garden Quarterly Meeting.

At the January 1, 1792 Men's Meeting of the Deep River MM, it was reported that the New Garden Quarterly Meeting had granted the request of the families at Gum Swamp to join the Deep River MM and that Lewis Thomas, and his sons, Joseph, Tildan, Lewis and Stephen were among those admitted into membership.[7]

On November 2, 1801, Lewis Thomas' request to be released as an Overseer of the Piney Grove PM was granted.[8]

On March 17, 1802, Lewis Thomas was prepared to become an Elder for the Piney Grove MM.[9]

On September 18, 1802, Lewis Thomas was admitted to the New Garden Quarterly Meeting In Guilford, North Carolina having produced a Certificate of Removal from the Piney Grove PM.[10]

On February 18, 1815, Lewis Thomas requested a Certificate of Removal for him and his family from New Garden MM to the Lick Creek MM, Indiana Territory. [11]

On June 24, 1815, Lewis Thomas was admitted to the Lick Creek MM, Orange County, Indiana Territory based upon a Certificate from the Whitewater MM, Wayne, Indiana Territory. [12]

On June 27, 1818, Lewis was appointed by the Lick Creek MM to a Committee consider the establishment of a weekly meeting at Honey Creek on the Wabash, Indiana.[13]

On September 9, 1818, Lewis' requested to be released as an Overseer at the Lick Creek MM, Orange County, Indiana was granted.[14]

Death: Lewis passed away in December of 1826 .

Last Will and Testament:

On April 3, 1826, Lewis Thomas of the County of Orange, State of Indiana, executed his Last Will and Testament leaving his Estate as follows: first, to his wife Agnes, a life estate in his plantation, dwelling and a life estate in specific personal property, with a remainder estate in the personal property to his son Tildan; second, to his daughter Ruth Ann, specific personal property; third, to his son Lewis, a reminder estate in 88 acres of land upon which the testator now lives; fourth, to his son Joseph, one dollar; fifth, to his son Stephen, one dollar; sixth, to Charles Baucham (?) one dollar; seventh, to John Baucham (?), one dollar; eighth, to Burril Graham; ninth, one dollar; tenth, to Eli Morris, one dollar; eleventh, to William Trueblood, one dollar; twelfth, to Daniel Lambdin, one dollar, and thirteenth, he nominated his "truly and well beloved friends Shadrack Ditto and Tildan Thomas" as the executors of his Will. Witnesses were S. Ditto, Thomas Atkinson, and Arthur Atkinson. The Will was proved upon the oaths of Shadrack Ditto and Arthur Atkinson in open court on December 7, 1826.[15]
