Biography

A Sarah Thomas was baptised at Sutton (Near Macclesfield), St George on 12 Nov 1837, daughter of Henry and Ellen. [1]

At the time of the 1841 Census, Sarah and her family of origin were living at Pell Street, Burslem, Wolstanton & Burslem, Staffordshire. In the household were Sarah and her sister Hannah, along with their parents Henry and Ellen. Sarah's father, Henry's, occupation is listed as tailor. Everyone is recorded as having been born in the County.[2]

By the time of the 1851 Census, Sarah and her sisters Hannah and Ann were in a household with her widowed mother, living at Peel Street, Burslem, Wolstanton, Staffordshire. Thirteen year old Sarah is listed as working as a potter spur maker. Her sisters (11 & 6 years old) were not working. Also in the house was Mary Wildblood, a married visitor who had been born in Derbyshire. In this Census, Sarah and her mother are listed as being born in Macclesfield, Cheshire. Sisters Hannah and Ann are listed as being born in Burslem, Staffordshire. [3]

In the 1861 Census, 23 year old Sarah was in the household of her mother, Ellen, who at 57 years old has no listed occupation. They were still living in 44, Peel Street, Burslem, Wolstanton. Also in the household was Sarah's sister Ann, 17. Both Sarah and Ann are listed as working as Potters.[4]

At the time of the 1871 Census, Sarah was living in the house of her sister Hannah, now married to Thomas Arrowsmith, with a family of four children. The household included one servant. Sarah's occupation is still Potter. [5]

Sarah thomas and Joshua Blackhurst married in a civil ceremony at Wolstanton in the second quarter of 1872. [6] Sarah was the second wife of Joshua Blackhurst. She was some ten years older than Joshua.

Sarah bore three daughters to Joshua: the first two (Mary Ellen b 1873 and Sarah Ellen B 1875) died before they were two years old. Both the little girls were buried at St Margarets, Wolstanton, where Sarah was also buried. The third daughter, Gertrude, lived into her 70s.

Sarah died at 41 years old, at Riley Street, Burslem, Wolstanton. [7] Joshua was present at her death.
