Biography

Sara was born on April 18, 1841 in Georgia.[1] She was the daughter of Seaborn Thomas and Susan Dumas.

When Sara was 19 years old, she married Thomas Duke on December 21, 1858 in Pike County.[2] Together they had the following children:

  3. Seaborn Jones Duke (b. 1865, Georgia)[4]
  4. Leatha Ann Duke May (b. 1866, Georgia)
  5. Bettie Duke Todd (b. 1867, Mississippi)[5]
  6. John Earl Duke (b. 1869, Georgia)
  7. Thomas Walter Duke (b. 1871, Mississippi)[6]
  8. Appie Celia Duke Lacy Hill May (b. 1872, Mississippi)[7]
  9. Minnie Lee Duke Elmore (b. 1873, Mississippi)[8]
  10. Lucy Underwood Duke Underwood (b. 1875, Mississippi)
  11. James Hendric Duke (b. 1877, Mississippi)

After Thomas died, Sara filed for a widow’s pension in February, 1908 based on his service in the Civil War, which was awarded (pension #13843).[12]

Sara died of pneumonia at age 90 on December 14, 1930 in Santa Anna, Texas.[1] She is interred at Santa Anna Cemetery (see Research Notes).[13]

  • 1850 - resided in father's household.[14]
  • 1860 – resided with husband and brother in Spalding Co. Georgia, age 19[15]
  • 1870 – resided with husband and six children in Tallahatchie Co., MS; keeping house, age 29.[16]
  • 1880 - resided with husband and eleven children in Ellis Co. Texas; she was keeping house and was 38 years old.[17]
  • 1900 – resided with husband, 3 daughters and a grandson; age 59, married 41 years, 14 children born, 12 still living.[18]
  • 1910 - Head of household; Granddaughter Mary Lorene Hunton (Jennie's daughter) (9) living with her in Haskell, Haskell County, Texas.[19]

Research Notes

  • Sara's grave stone incorrectly lists her year of death as 1929, however she is listed on the 1930 census and her death certificate lists the year of her death as 1930.
