John was born about 1786 to parents Charles Thomas and Judith (Ripley) Thomas.

  • 1820 U. S. Census: John, age 34, lived in Patrick County, Virginia. Microfilm unreadable, index only information.[2]
  • 1830 U. S. Census: John Thomas lived in Montgomery County, Virginia, with a male under age 5 (Samuel, 3), a male between 5-10 (Joseph, 4?), two males 10-15 (John Wesley, 13, and Adam? But Adam was 18), a male 40-50 (father John, 44). Also one female under 5, one female 5-10, and one 30-40 (Polly, 37). John's occupation was agriculture. No slaves. Total in household was 8. John W.'s death record states he was born in Floyd County, which became a county in 1831, by taking part of Montgomery County. He is the second John Thomas on the image, 5th line from bottom. [3]
  • 1850 U. S. Census: John Thomas Sr., age 64, lived in Floyd County, Virginia with wife Mary, 58, and children Joseph, 26, Samuel, 22, Mary, 19, and Sarah, 10. John was a farmer, real estate valued at $800, born in Patrick, Virginia, as were his wife, Mary, son Samuel, and daughter Mary. Joseph and Sarah were born in Floyd, Virginia. Joseph was also a farmer, had real estate valued at $600. Wife Mary was illiterate.[4]
  • 1850 Slave Schedule: John Wesley Thomas not found on Slave Schedule. May assume he held no slaves.
  • 1860 U. S. Census: John Thomas Sr., age 74, lived in Floyd County, Virginia with wife Mary, 63, and daughter Sarah P., 23. John's occupation was farmer, real estate valued at $500, personal estate valued at $938. John was born in Virginia, Mary and Sarah could not read or write. Not on 1860 Slave Schedule. [5]
  • 1870 U. S. Census: John, 85, lived in Jacksonville, Floyd County, Virginia with daughter, Sarah Hall, 33, and her husband Rupel Hall, 23. John's occupation was farmer, Rupel's was "on farm", Sarah's was housekeeping. John had no real estate and personal property valued at $130, Rupel had no real estate and no personal property; Sarah had real estate valued at $300 and no personal property. All members born in Virginia, the 2 men were voters.[6]
  • 1871 John W. Thomas Sr. died in 1871, approximate age 86. Reported year of birth of 1790 is incorrect. He was buried in Thomas Grove Cemetary, Floyd, Floyd County, Virginia. Find A Grave: Memorial #155832981. Spouse was Mary Turner Thomas, 1793-1875. Sons also buried there were Adam Thomas, 1812-1885, John Wesley Thomas Jr., 1816-1893, and Samuel Swanson Thomas, 1827-1911.[7]
