Miles's baptism record names his father as Howell Thomas and his mother as Elizabeth. He was baptised on 19 Dec 1830[1]. Miles was the second son of Howell and Elizabeth to be named Miles. His predecessor died in the same year he was born.
Miles appears in the census of 1841, as an 8 year old living with his father and siblings Thomas, Elizabeth, David and John, and a female servant Maria Jones (but not his mother) on Weston Farm, Cadoxton Juxta Barry, Glamorganshire, Wales [3]
By the 1851 census, his father Howell had died, and he was living at Sea View, Cadoxton Juxta Barry, with his mother Elizabeth, brother John, ?maternal? aunt Grace (John) Roberts, house servant Maria Jones, and lodger John Thomas [4]. His occupation is recorded as Carpenter. Is Maria Jones the same servant who lived with the Thomases ten years prior on Weston Farm? Her age would suggest she might be.
On 17 Mar 1859 Miles married Martha Woodbridge in St Marks Church, in the parish of Lyncombe. Their marriage is recorded in the Somerset Marriage Index, as between Meles [sic] Thomas and Martha Moodbridge [sic] [5] Miles father is recorded as Howell Thomas, and he is of Cadoxton. Miles is recorded as being an Engineer [2a]. Miles is noted in the family notice of his marriage, in Bath, to "Miss Woodbridge", as being the youngest son of the late Howell Thomas of Cadoxton Juxta Barry [2]. Their witnesses were Mark Bagg and Sarah Thomas. Miles is listed as an Engineer[2b]
In the 1861 census, a Miles Thomas, an engine fitter born in Cadoxton was listed living with his wife Martha, and daughter Lily Treason/Freason/Teresa 1 yr old, and one servant in Ebenezer Terrace, Lyncombe and Widcombe, Bath, Somerset, England [6].
Miles and Martha had at least two more children - in the 1871 Census, Martha Thomas, widow born in Wiltshire, working as a green grocer, living in Widcombe, had two children in her home: William 10 years old and Agnes 6 years old. [1] William Howell Thomas, mother maiden name Woodbridge, was born in the second quarter of 1861. [2]
In the 1864 Directory Post Office Bath Directory a Miles Thomas's address is listed as Canal Tavern, Canal Bridge, Widcombe. [3]
A Miles Thomas died in Bath during the last quarter of 1864. [4]
