On 6 June 1841 Richard Thomas (35) Tin Miner, wife Peggy Thomas (35) with children Richard Thomas (10), Edward Thomas (8), Mathew Thomas (6) and Margaret Thomas (1) lived in Canons Town, Ludgvan, Cornwall, England. [3]
On 31 March 1851 Jane Tregloan (43) with children Mother Tregloan (22), Kitty Tregloan (21), Joseph Tregloan (18), William Tregloan (16), Edward Tregloan (13) with lodgers Richard Thomas (20) and Edward Tregloan Thomas (18) both miners, lived in Crowlas, Ludgvan, Cornwall, England. [4]
Richard emigrated from Cornwall on the vessel Isle of Thanet and arrived in South Australia on 24 October 1854.
Richard Thomas married Mary Jane Nankivell on 1 November 1856 at St Mary's Church, Kooringa, South Australia. Fathers Philip Nankivell and Richard Thomas. [5]
Richard passed away in 1912, aged 81 and a half years [6] and was buried at the Burra Cemetery. [7]
THOMAS[8] — On July 8, at Kooringa, Richard, beloved husband of M. J. Thomas and father of Mrs. S. J. Snell (Broken Hill) and Mrs. M. E. Pressick (Burra). Aged 81½ years. Resting, sweetly resting.
Mrs. Thomas and family, of Kooringa, desire to sincerely thank all relatives and friends for help and expressions of sympathy in their late sad bereavement, especially Dr. Ashton for his kind and faithful attention.
We regret to record the death of Mr Richard Thomas, of Quarry street, Kooringa, which took place on Monday morning, after a long illness. The deceased was 81 years of age, and was a very old resident of the town. He was born in Cornwall, England, in January, 1831, and came to South Australia in the ship Isle of Finnet in 1854 (Actual name was the "Isle of Thanet [10]),coming direct to Burra, and worked as a miner in the old Burra mine for about 30 years. He was curator of the cemetery for some 26 years, giving up the position about two years ago on account of failing health. Mr Thomas was connec-ted with Methodism for many years, and was a member of the Burra Lodge for some 50 years. He was of a kindly and retiring disposition. He was the father of 12 children, and leaves a widow and two daughters- Mrs J. Snell, Broken Hill, and Mrs Pressick, Burra.
