Mary was born in Indiana in July of 1847, one month after her father, Oliver William Thomas, passed away. She was raised by her mother, Sarah Elizabeth Dukes, and her step-father, John Leffler. She married Henry Lewellyn Layton in 1866, and they moved to Nebraska in 1870. She had 10 children, two of whom preceded her in death. She passed away in 1918 at their home in Silver Creek, Nebraska, at the age of 70.
