Biography

John was born on 23 April 1846. He was the youngest son of Jesse Thomas and Rhoda Jackson. He is listed on the 1850 census as a two year old in the household of his father Jesse Thomas and his step-mother, Sarah Crawford Thomas. [1]

John is 14 years old in the 1860 census still in the home of his father and step-mother in Franklin County, Georgia. "United States Census, 1860", database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MZMB-43W : 13 December 2017), John Thomas in entry for Jesse Thomas, 1860.

In 1880 John, Vastine and children are living in Cooke County, Texas. They were part of the large group of Thomas, Clark and related family members who left Georgia to settle in Texas. [2]

Research Note

No marriage record is found in Franklin County, Georgia even though both families lived there; It is possible that they were married across the state line in South Carolina where marriage records were not kept until after 1900. Vastine is found on the 1870 census with her parents and siblings in Franklin County, Georgia. John and Vastine's first child, Emma, was born in Jefferson, Harrison County, Texas in December 1872. Jefferson was the arrival point for the families who traveled together from Franklin County, Georgia to Texas. While some of the family members settled in Gregg and Harrison Counties, John and Vastine went first to Cooke County and finally to Deaf Smith County in West Texas where they remained.
