Biography

Can anyone add sourced documentation to this profile?

In 1850, Elizabeth Thomas (age 55) resided with her husband Lindsey (age 64) and son Joseph (age 38) in Kanawha County, Virginia.[1][2]

The Kanawha County, West Virginia death records for 1857 show that Elizabeth Thomas reported her husband Linzey Thomas died of old age on 29 Apr 1857 at age 72.[3] Later that year, Elizabeth Thomas reported the death of her son Joseph Thomas who died at age 39 on 27 Dec 1857.[4]

Elizabeth Thomas was named executrix in the will of her husband which was written 13 Mar 1857, proved 18 May 1857 and recorded in the Kanawha County Will Book 1, page 645.[5]

In 1860, Betsey Thomas resided in her own household next to the entry of the family of her son James Thomas in the census.[6][7]

Kanawha County became part of West Virginia during the Civil War.

Elizabeth Thomas died in January 1868, between the dates her will was written and when it was proved. Elizabeth Thomas wrote her will on 7 Jan 1868 and it was proved on 14 Jan 1868 and recorded in the Kanawha County Will Book 2, page 194.[8][9]

Notes and Clues

The will of Lindsey Thomas mentioned beloved wife Elizabeth Thomas. It mentioned land called Spring Hill Tract purchased from Nelson Mitchell and Susan his wife. The will also mentioned a 750 acre tract purchased from the heirs of John Thomas and lying on the Kanawha River. The will left the land to be used by his widow and to go to son James M Thomas and his daughter Caroline Thomas, wife of David S. Thomas. Son Joseph was to receive money from the estate.

The will of Elizabeth Thomas referred to the will of her husband "Col." Lindsey Thomas. She also mentioned her son James M. Thomas and daughter Caroline E. Thomas, who were to be executor and executrix of her will. She asked that these executrix and executor were to erect two monuments, one in memory of her departed husband Col. Lindsey Thomas and one in memory of her departed son Joseph.

There is a findagrave page for a Joseph Thomas with photograph of a tombstone which says Joseph Thomas died Dec. 27, 1857. There are only four graves listed at that "Thomas Cemetery". Perhaps this was a family cemetery where Joseph and his parents were buried.
