In the 1901 census Herbert was living with his parents James Rhodes Thomas and Mary Agnes Thomas at 56 Albany Road, Roath, Cardiff. He was aged 3 years. [2]
In 1911 the family was living at The Philog, 60 Merthyr Road, Whitchurch, Cardiff. Herbert was aged 13 years. [3]
The family then moved to live in South Africa.
Herbert Stephen Thomas married Mabel Freda Carter on 10 June 1922 at the Wesleyan Methodist Church, Benoni, Transvaal, South Africa after banns. The marriage register recorded Herbert was a bachelor aged 24. He had been born in Cardiff, South Wales and was then living at 50 Leeuwpoort St, Boksburg. Mabel was a spinster aged 21. She had been born in Bearwood, Birmingham, England and was then living at 132 Victoria St, Benoni. Their witnesses were R. G. [Ronald Graham] Thomas, Herbert's brother, and M. Wolfenden[?]. [4]
This couple had two known children named Roy Herbert Thomas and Joy Peggy Thomas.
Roy Herbert Thomas, the son of Herbert Stephen Thomas, died on 20 June 1925 at 51 Railway Ave, Benoni aged 21 days of marasmus convulsions. The informant of his death was A. J. Bouwer, the undertaker. [5]
When Herbert's father James Rhodes Thomas died in 1936 Herbert was recorded living at 87 Ninth St, Orange Grove, Johannesburg. [6]

Mabel Freda Thomas (born Carter) died on 19 October 1969 at Wentworth Hospital, Durban aged 68 years of a pulmonary embolism, cerebro vascular disease, arteriosclerosis heart disease and diabetes mellitus. Her usual address was at Nazareth House, 82 South Ridge Rd, Durban. It was further recorded Mabel was born on 9 January 1901 at Birmingham. Her parents were deceased. Mabel was the widow of Herbert Stephen Thomas, who had died on 18 January 1966 at Durban. They had one daughter named Joy Peggy Bockel (born Thomas). Mabel had been in receipt of a Civil Service Pension prior to her death. The informant of her death notice was daughter J P Bockel, who had neither been at the death or viewed the remains.
In her will Mabel, dated 2 June 1967, left legacies of R400 to each of her four grandchildren, the children of daughter Joy. The residue of her estate, after costs, amounting to R4583.33 was left to daughter Joy Peggy Bockel of 35 Fifth Ave, Parkhurst, Johannesburg. [8]
