Biography

Jane Thomas was born in 1821 at Glastonbury, Somerset, and was baptized 7 Oct 1821 at Bridgewater, Somerset, England. She was the daughter of John Thomas (post boy) and Sarah Fisher.

Jane married John Anstey at St John Paddington on 18 Nov 1847, both of 41 Star Street, Paddington. John’s father was John Anstey (carpenter), Jane’s father was John Thomas (servant).

Their first child William was born on 19 Aug 1848 at Chelsea, Middlesex, England. Their second child Jane was born 4 Apr 1850 at Chelsea. Their third child John was born in 1852 in Chelsea.

Jane, John, and their three children migrated to Australia arriving in Sydney Harbour on 19 Mar 1853 aboard the Bussorah Merchant [1]. Jane’s youngest sister Eliza Thomas was also on that ship.

Jane and John must have moved to Melbourne not long after arriving in Sydney. Their next six children were all born in Victoria.

Elizabeth was born in Apr 1854 at St Kilda, Victoria, she died, aged 1 month, on 14 May 1854 at St Kilda. Henry was born at St Kilda on 28 Jul 1855, he died on 22 Jul 1881 at Mansfield, Victoria. Frederick born at St Kilda in 1857, he died on 12 Apr 1938 at Alexandra, Victoria. Annie was born on 9 Apr 1859 at St Kilda, she died on 2 Feb 1935 at St Kilda. Jane died on 9 Aug 1893 at Walhalla, Victoria, and is buried in the Walhalla Cemetery.

Jane Anstey (née Thomas) was my 2x great grandmother’s sister. Her parents were John Thomas and Sarah Fisher…they were married on 22 May 1820 in Glastonbury, Somerset, England. They had five children. Jane was born in 1821, she was baptised on 7 Oct 1821 at Bridgewater St Mary, Somerset. Sarah was born in 1823, she was baptised on 16 Mar 1823 at Bridgewater St Mary, Somerset. Elizabeth (my 2x great grandmother) was born in 1825, she was baptised on 30 Jan 1825 at Bridgewater St Mary, Somerset. Sometime after Elizabeth’s birth the family moved to Clifton, Bristol, Gloucestershire because their next two children were born there. John was born in 1827, he was baptised on 27 May 1827 at St Andrew’s, Clifton, Gloucestershire. Finally, Eliza was born in 1834, she was baptised on 7 Sep 1834 at St Andrew’s, Clifton, Gloucestershire.

It seems that Sarah Fisher died sometime between when Eliza was born and the date of the 1841 Census. She was not listed with John and four of his children (Elizabeth was working away) in that Census.

Jane married John Anstey on 18 Nov 1847 at St John, Paddington, England. They had three children in England before they came out to Australia. William was born on 19 Aug 1848 in Chelsea, Middlesex; Jane was born on 4 Apr 1850 in Chelsea, Middlesex; and John was born in 1852 in Chelsea, Middlesex. They all came out to Australia on the Bussorah Merchant in 1853. The rest of their children were all born here.

Jane’s sister Eliza came with them on the same ship in 1853. My 2x great grandmother Elizabeth and her four children came out to Australia in 1871…ten years after the death of her husband.
