Biography

Birth

James was born about 1845 (censuses), and according to his son Henry, he was born in Wisconsin. (1920 census)

Name

The 1898 census gives his Hocąk name as Ne-jar-wa-ne-ki-le-kaw, which is a corruption of Nįéjawanikíriga, variant, Nįjawanįkíriga, an attested Wolf Clan name meaning, "He who Brings Them Back from the Water". This is derived from , "water"; éja, "there, at, from"; wa-, a suffix meaning, "them"; , "to take, have, bring"; kiri, to return arriving"; -ga, a definite article suffix used in personal names.

Death

He appears in the 1907 census, but is missing from 1909 onwards, indicating that he died sometime between 30 June 1907 and 30 June 1909.
