Biography

Birth

Joseph was born on 1 September 1885 (Find a Grave), in Nebraska. (1930 census) He is the son of James Thomas.

Name

Joseph's grave stone has the Hocąk name Homp Na Hos Ga carved on it (Find a Grave), which answers to the name given in the 1898 census, where it is rendered Hump-na-ha-ska-kaw. This is Hą̄bᵋną̄hásgaga, "Light Among the Birch Trees," which is from hą̄p, "light, daylight, day"; ną̄hásga, "birch tree"; and -ga, a definite article suffix used in personal names. The significance of this name, and to what clan it belongs, is obscure.

He was short, of medium build, with brown eyes and black hair. (Draft Card)
