Ira was born in 1931 at the Winnebago Indian Agency Hospital. In the middle of a very cold Nebraska winter, he was bundled in blankets and transported to the family homestead located approximately 8 miles west of Winnebago in the back of a horse drawn wagon. It is believed he caught pneumonia during the trip and died shortly thereafter. He was the son of Theodore Thomas and Mary Renfer. He passed away in 1931. He was buried in an unmarked grave in the 'old' part of the Winnebago Cemetery on a ridge facing the old entrance road & the current main entrance. When the cemetery was expanded, the old road was closed and the ridge was bulldozed to make way for a new access road. Pieces of the old cement road were used to shore up the ridge, many graves were lost. Mary Renfer Thomas requested that Alonzo 'Jim' Thomas add Ira's name to her headstone in the Native American Church Cemetery (James Rave Cemetery) upon her death.
