Biography

Jane was born in Mountfield, Sussex, England^[1] to William Thomas and Mary Roots. She was baptized on Christmas Day, 25 December, 1821 in Mountfield.^[2] Jane was one of twelve siblings. She married James Page, a blacksmith, on 8 January 1843 in Lewisham, Kent.^[3]. By 1843, the couple had moved to Gravesend, Kent where they had their daughter, Mary Jane.^[4] Three years later they were living in Sedlescombe, Sussex where they welcomed Fanny to their family.^[5]

By 1851 however, Jane was a widow and the small family was living apart with Jane working as a servant in Bexhill, Sussex,^[6] while her children were living with their grandparents, Mary and William Thomas.^[7] Jane was able to establish herself as a laundress to support herself and her family. In 1861, her parents were living with her and her daughter, Fanny, in Hastings, Sussex.^[8] Ten years later, her elder daughter, Mary, a dressmaker, was residing with Jane in Hastings.^[9]

One of her daughters wed George Smith. By 1881,^[10] Jane came to live in Bexhill, Sussex with George, by then a widower, and continued to live with him for at least 20 years.^[11]. Jane continued to work as a laundress until she was at least 70.

Jane passed away in 1904 at the age of 84.^[12]
