Biography

This profile is part of the Thomas Name Study.

Charles Henry Reddaway Thomas was the eldest son of Charles and Hannah Thomas. Not long after Charles Thomas was born, the family moved to the goldfields at Jembaicumbene and Araluen near Braidwood in New South Wales, where Charles was to spend his childhood. Within the next few years, 3 brothers were born, each of whom were close in age to him. He had 6 surviving brothers in all. His only surviving sister, Julia Jane, was 11 years younger than him.

Charles was 15 years old when the family returned from the goldfields to Woolloomooloo in Sydney. Most likely by now he would have left school and started in his trade, as a plasterer.

In 1880, at the age of 21, Charles married Catherine (Kate) Bruce. In the early years of their marriage they moved around the inner suburbs of Sydney, moving briefly to St Leonards from 1884 to 1886 and then back to Woollahra in 1888. The family lived at Darlinghurst in July 1891, and by April 1895, had moved to Lane Cove, on the North Shore of Sydney. They lived at Gore Hill in December 1898. Presumably there was plenty of work for a plasterer on the rapidly expanding North Shore.

For many years, Charles and Kate lived at 'Hildaville' 1 Portview Road Greenwich. In their later years Charles resided with their eldest daughter, Hilda and her family at Landers Road, Lane Cove. Charles died of chronic myocarditis at the age of 93.

Thomas-23811 and Thomas-8119 appear to represent the same person because: Definitely duplicates. Charles Henry Reddaway Thomas is my gr grandfather. William Henry Thomas, his son, is my grandfather's uncle
