The late John Thompson was a son of Paul Thompson. John m. Betsey (Tupper) dau. of Joseph Tupper, the latter coming from the state of Conn. in Machias’ earlier days, becoming a resident thereof. Joseph Tupper was a brother of Ansel Tupper many years ago a resident of Jonesboro, occupying a store on a wharf on the West side of the river near and just below the end of the bridge. The store building disappeared many years ago, relics of the wharf are scarcely seen today.

John Thompson & his wife Betsey were the parents of 12 children, 10 boys & 2 girls. The oldest was one of the girls. Then 10 boys were born to them - one pair of twins, Gideon and James. The oldest child Sarah m. Daniel Schoppee. The youngest child, Abigail, now about 70 yrs of age - never married and is probably living in Cherryfield. Gideon, one of the twin boys is said to be living in Portland. James died in Roque Bluffs or Englishman’s River several years ago. William, now considerably past three score and ten, is the only one living here of 12 children; his house is on the opposite side of the road from the spot of his birthplace, a few rods farther south, but on part of the same lot once the homestead of his father John.
