MUSTER ROLLS OF THE VIRGINIA MILITIA IN THE WAR OF 1812:
William B. Thompson rank: Capt. Time of Service: 6 days
The following is taken from Personal Papers - Francis Bland Randolph Chp.of Am. Soc. DAR, homes of Dinwiddie Co. VA., Accession No. 22580 (40pages), The Library of VA, Richmond, VA.:
"White Oak Grove
Seven miles west of Harper's Home, Dinwiddie Co., VA. Erected abt.1760. Owned by Wm. B. Thompson in 1811. Present owner Earnest L.Elder. Situated in an oak grove. The house repaired by Wm. Thompson hasthe date 1811 on chimney. The south end has two stories, the north endone story and a half, north of this is a wing one story high. All havegabled roof and dormer windows. A Colonial porch and a six panel door.Mantels elaborate with grill work - 72 inches high to ceiling.
Capt. William B. Thompson was a direct descendant to Col JosephBuffington Darville, who came to America from England in 1700. A man ofgreat wealth [Wm. Thompson] and intellect and had one of the mostvaluable libraries in the county."
OLD HOMES OF DINWIDDIE CO.,VA.:
"On State 40, eleven and a half miles from the junction with U. S.1, DARVILL stands near the highway. The house is of unusualconstruction—a gabled two-story building, probably the first, having beenextended by two wings that changed the entrance of the original sectionfrom the side to the gabled end. The wings are of story-and-a-halfconstruction with outside chimneys and a single dormer in each. Thebasement harbors an apparatus for distilling liquors, presumably used inan earlier day. The large hall on the first floor is wainscoted, and thewide flooring is of hard pine. The house has four flights of steep, winding stairs. This was the home of Doctor William Feild Thompson, whorepresented Dinwiddie in the State Senate from 1850 to 1863 and whoseson, Knox Thompson, sat in the House of Delegates from 1891 to 1895.
Slightly over a mile west of Darvill is WHITE OAK GROVE, the homebuilt by William B. Thompson, father of Doctor Thompson. This house, likemany others in Dinwiddie, was not built all of a piece. The smallersection—story-and-a-half with one dormer in its steep roof—is undoubtedlythe older. On the chimney of the larger are the initials W. B. T. and thedate 1811. Both sections have outside end-chimneys. A basement contains ahuge fireplace in each of its two rooms. The south room, which wasprobably the parlor, is exquisitely paneled to its ceiling; and each ofthe four windows has 18 small panes. In the family burying groundtombstones mark the graves of William B. Thompson (17791845) and his wifePrudence (1779-1821); and of Doctor William Feild Thompson (1810-1891)and his wife Mary Ellen Cousins Thompson (1826-1893). William B. Thompsonwas the son of William F. Thompson and Margaret Darvill. Because ColonelJoseph Buffington Darvill objected to his daughter's marrying Thompson,he brought Margaret to Virginia. The suitor followed, however, foundMargaret, married her, and presumably lived happily ever after."
