Biography

Thomas Thompson was baptised on 14 Sep 1788 at Sherston, Wiltshire, son of Richard and Ann.[1]

It is presumed he was the Thomas Thompson who was a witness at the wedding of his sister Ann Thompson to Isaac Scutts on 18 Apr 1833 at Malmesbury, Wiltshire.[2]

Thomas married Elizabeth Lewis on 2 May 1812 in Sherston Magna, Wiltshire, England.[3] (See research notes below.) He was a blacksmith, and this is identified in all but the first of the birth records of his children, who include:

  1. Morris, son of Thomas Thompson & Elizabeth, was baptised on 19 July 1812 in Sherston, Wiltshire, England.[4]
  2. Thomas, son of Thomas Thompson & Elizabeth, was baptised on 1 March 1814 in Sherston, Wiltshire, England.[5] (Father is listed as a blacksmith.)
  3. Alice, daughter of Thomas Thompson & Elizabeth, was baptised on 7 May 1815 in Sherston, Wiltshire, England.[6]
  4. Sarah, daughter of Thomas Thompson & Elizabeth, was baptised on 19 October 1817 in Sherston, Wiltshire, England.[7]
  5. Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Thompson & Elizabeth, was baptised on 11 March 1821 in Sherston, Wiltshire, England.[8]
  6. Ann, daughter of Thomas Thompson & Elizabeth, was baptised on 29 December 1822 in Sherston, Wiltshire, England.[9]
  7. Mary, daughter of Thomas Thompson & Elizabeth, was baptised on 3 October 1824 in Sherston, Wiltshire, England.[10]

(His occupation as a blacksmith is helpful in distinguishing between him and another Thomas and Elizabeth Thompson having children around the same time and place, with the latter being a Yeoman.)

In the 1841 census Thomas (age 50) was on High Street, Sherston Magna, Malmesbury, Wiltshire, England.[11]

In the 1851 census Thomas (age 60), Blacksmith emp. 1 man, was the married head of household in Sherston Magna, Sherston, Malmesbury, Wiltshire, England.[12]

It is presumed he was the Thomas Thompson who died in 1853 age 65.[13]

Thomas Thompson was buried on 25 Aug 1853 at Sherston, Wiltshire, with a given age of 64.[14]
