Biography

Richard Thompson was a founder of the town of Oxford, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. [1]

He was born 1744 in Yorkshire England, and died October 10, 1821 in Oxford, Cumberland, Nova Scotia, Canada. [2]

He arrived in Canada on May 9, 1774 aboard sailing ship "Two Friends." [3] Some sources suggest he came aboard the Albion but he appears on the Two Friends ship rostor.

He married Dorthy Patton on December 4, 1774 in de Bute, New Brunswick. She was the daughter of Mark Patton and Ann McGowan. She was born 1750 in Londonderry Ulster Ireland, and died 1830 in Oxford, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Richard and Dorthy Thompson lived in Pointe de Bute until 1791. They left there when there son Ralph was 17 years old, Richard 15, and Mark 13. They came down the coast of Nova Scotia by ship and went up the River Philip to where it meets the Black River. At this site on February 1, 1792 he bought 1500 acres from William Allan for 70 Pounds Sterling. This was part of the Allan Family land grant of 1785. It is now the location of the Town of Oxford, Nova Scotia. [4]
