Obediah (the younger) was born in Georgia in 1862 or 1863 to Obediah and Sarah Thompson. An age of eight is entered for the 1870 US Census for Georgia. He was the namesake of his father, and was the youngest of five chilldren: Bayliss; William; George Mary; Obediah.
His father was in the Confederate Army from Georgia and seems to have left for military action before Obediah was born. Obediah senior was later captured by the Union Army at Haggarstown, Maryland, and was imprisioned in a Union POW camp at Point Lookout, Maryland. Obediah senior died in this camp of some disease in October of 1863. Confederate Army records have the father marked as a deserter, but Obadiah's name is entered on a memorial marker for the Confederate soldiers who died at Point Lookout.
Sometime after 1870, the mother, Sarah, moved the family to New Albany, Mississippi where her widowed brother ran a retail establishment. Obediah (the younger) probably grew up in New Albany gained knowledge of the retail business through working at his uncle's store.
Obediah met Lena and married her on April 25 1888. He would have been about age twenty-six. The couple had six children
