DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Samuel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Samuel:

Hi Ellen,

Thanks for responding to my email query. I will be glad to provide you more information about my Samuel Thompson as follows:

DOB: 3/22/1733 or 1735?

Spouse: Elizabeth Mary Andrews, 4/21/1732 - 11/26/1780, married (11/26/1750)

Father: Joseph Thompson

Mother: Sarah Stearns (1689 - 1741)

Son: Samuel Thompson (1755 - 1837)

Some of my sources included: FamilySearch.org, MA Births and Christenings, and MA State Vital Records.

I have to admit that some of my research on Samuel Thompson may have blended with Captain Samuel Thomson, however, I have observed that others have been confused by the two men as evidenced by their writings.

I would appreciate anything that you can find on Samuel Thompson that could distinguish him from Captain Thomson. My specialty in ancestral research is military history.

Thank you,

Phil Ostrander, Jr. Descendant of Revolutionary War Soldiers (19)

Hi, Phil. I had a hard time finding any records relevant to the names and dates you posted.

I do find that the DAR database has numerous entries for men named Samuel Thompson, including about 10 who were from Massachusetts or served Massachusetts, but none of those entries corresponds to this man. This man appears in an SAR database, but there apparently have been no SAR members who based an application on him. I have to surmise that no descendants have applied to either DAR or SAR on the basis of his record. (And as it happens, I am not aware of any DAR or SAR members or applicants in my family lines that descend from him.) There probably are several

I suspect that some of the information you cited may derive from user-created online family trees that aren't supported by good documentation. Most of my searches in Massachusetts records were fruitless, but I find a couple of records that do correspond with your data for people you mentioned. Specifically, Elisabeth Andrews was baptized in Ipswich, Massachusetts, on 25 April 1732 (see https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/10813128:2495 and https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/2495/images/40369_272008__0047-00096); a Mrs. Elizabeth Andrews married Joseph Thompson in Ipswich on 26 November 1750 (Ipswich vital records at https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/1493115:61401 and probably also on free websites), and Joseph Thomson and Eliz his wife had ten children, born 1751 to 1764, recorded at Beverly, Massachusetts, as a group, including Samuel born 30 June 1754 (see https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/2495/images/40168_263798__0025-00114). Ipswich and Beverly are towns in Essex County, Massachusetts, not near Holden, and 1754 is not 1734, but at least these are records that support some of the details you have.

Samuel born in Ipswich in 1654 is a DAR ancestor: https://services.dar.org/public/dar_research/search_adb/?action=full&p_id=A114530

ADDED: Also, baptism of Samuel, son of Joseph, in Ipswich in 1755 is at https://ma-vitalrecords.org/MA/Essex/Ipswich/Images/Ipswich_B365.shtml and the earlier marriage of Joseph and Mrs. Elizabeth is at https://ma-vitalrecords.org/MA/Essex/Ipswich/Images/Ipswich_M423.shtml

Good Morning Ellen Smith,

I was referred to you by Shirlea, WikiTree G2G. I am in a quandary about Samuel Thomson vs. Samuel Thompson. Both were born at about the same time, 1735 vs. 1737. Both were apparently born and died in Holden, Worcester County, MA. Both had sons named Samuel. Both apparently fought in the Revolutionary War. You provided information about Captain Samuel Thompson but in your research, do you have any information about the other Samuel Thompson?

Thank you,

Phil Ostrander

I know nothing about a second Samuel Thompson, born about the same time as this man, and also living in Holden. There are no other contemporary Thom(p)son families (other than this man, his parents, and his siblings and their children) in Holden vital records. This man did have a brother William of similar age, and both this man and his brother William both had sons named Samuel whose births are recorded in the vital records.

What evidence do you have for this other Samuel?

Note: Most of the Rev. War citations on this profile were added by another member. The service records appear to be for this man, but I have not delved into his military history.
